Secrets of the Selection Criteria

Most government recruiters will require selection criteria to be submitted as part of the application process, but, it needn’t be a daunting experience.

Selection Criteria Questions are a great opportunity to set yourself apart from others, by outlining and showcasing your experience in measurable terms. They are designed to hone in on your skills and expertise, and also highlight the value add you can bring to a department or company.

The most important part of the selection criteria is HOW you answer them… think, I am a STAR!!!!

Here is some tips on how to answer them.

Situation/Task

Outline a specific example of a situation, task or activity that is relevant to the question and to the potential employer. Use keywords from the question to help you with examples. What was your role? What task were you assigned or trying to complete?

Actions

Keep this section concise and succinct. Don’t make this too long but, what did you do in response to the task? Again, use keywords and phrases that will address the criteria requirements. Include demonstrated skills and abilities, using strong and action-orientated language.

Result

Arguable the most important part. What were the results that flowed from your actions? The recruiter will be eager to hear the outcome to evaluate how you can make an impact to their business. Make it memorable by ensuring you include specific and measurable results. Generic responses here, can make or break the shortlisting opportunity.
