The dreaded Selection Criteria! Most government jobs in Australia will ask you to answer a series of Selection Criteria questions to ensure candidates have the right skills, experience, qualifications, and capabilities they are looking for.
Here are some TopTips to help you breeze through!
Addressing the Criteria
ALWAYS address every criterion. Even if you don’t have direct experience, make an effort to outline the skills you do have, and/or your willingness to learn the required skills. Individually address each criterion under a separate heading.
Less is More
Keep your answers concise, short and to the point, but ensuring all of the question is answered. Recommended length of the responses is 3/4 page per criterion.
STAR
We have covered this before, however, it is critical. All answers should be in the STAR format – Situation or Task, Actions and Results. The recruiter will be looking for this format in your responses.
Active Verbs
Use active language in your responses, rather than passive – “I managed”, rather than “I was responsible for”. This ensures you are keeping the reader engaged and focused on your true skills.
