How to write an engaging resume

Need some tips on writing the perfect resume? Before you start writing one of the most important documents of your career, use these tips to write an engaging resume.

Research the company

Recruiters and interviewers will want to see that you have researched the company, mission and values, to ensure that you are the perfect fit for the organisation. Also, they will want to know that the job you are applying for, their job, is exactly the job you want and not just another application.

Ideally, you should have a fresh resume for each role you apply for as this demonstrates you have done your homework.

Pay special attention to the job advertisement

Recruiters and ATS scanning systems are looking for keywords, and some of the most important keywords are in the job advertisement. Use these keywords in your resume for maximum impact and to bypass the scanning software. The job advertisement is the perfect place to steal ideas.

Formatting is key

Stand out from the crowd by presenting a clean, concise and compact document, rather than reams of information. Recruiters view hundreds of resumes for each role, so, it’s critical that your resume is formatted correctly. Indentation, bold, italics, font size and font choice are all critical elements to crafting the perfect document.

Make your resume is easy to read using a combination of bullet points and paragraphs. Bullet points to draw attention to achievements and paragraphs to summarise responsibilities. Use a maximum of six bullet points for each professional experience you have, and ensure they are specific. The more “numbers” you can provide, the more engaging the document will be. Providing numbers will demonstrate that you are results- orientated, and are interested in bringing valuable achievements to the company.

Don’t go too far back in history

Adding experience that is over 15 years old is not advantageous and can be detrimental to your resume for a numbers of reasons, including the document being too long, and experience being irrelevant to the recruiter. Keep your potential employer engaged by providing relevant, more recent experience.
