Nervous about your BEI? Not sure what to expect? Here’s some tips on breezing through a Behavioural Event Interview!
What is a BEI?
A Behavioural Event Interview is a great way to showcase your experience with real and concrete examples of how YOU can add value to a new organisation. BEIs are conducted to eliminate candidates who cannot demonstrate the key competencies companies are looking for. Saying you have the skills versus actual examples of demonstrated abilities is the key.
Be a STAR
Answering BEI questions in the STAR format is critical. Situation/Task, Actions and Results. What was the Situation/Task (in relation to the question)?. What were the Actions you took? and, what were the Results? Keep your answers concise and to the point. Don’t waffle on or go off track. Keep your focus on the question and answer with “I” rather than “we” . This will demonstrate your talent and what YOU bring to the table.
Rehearse and Practice
A great way to ensure you are prepared for a BEI is to practice and rehearse. There is a wealth of information and BEI questions on the internet, so, being prepared is one of the most important aspects of the interview process. Being able to answer professionally and with specific examples will pay dividends.
